1st BADEN
POWELL PARK
SCOUT GROUP
Baden Powell Park is close to the site
that was used in the first Australian Jamboree in 1934/1935.
As such this area has special historical value
to those involved in Scouting. The Frankston District Badge has its own
historical interest.
When the Mornington Peninsula Country was
split in 1952 to form Mornington Peninsular District and the Frankston
District, the latter conducted a search for a new badge design. It was finally
suggested that the Frankston District request permission from the Victorian
Scout headquarters to use the design which had brought fame to the district
when the first Australian Jamboree was held there, as a basis for the district
badge.
The original Jamboree Badge was designed
by Levi Molineux, Scoutmaster of the 11th Hawthorn Troop, as he
thought the Kangaroo and Boomerang symbols would be suitable for Australia's
first Jamboree. Permission was granted and the only alteration made was the
wording around the perimeter to read 'Frankston District Victoria'. The dark
green badge and Kangaroo in gold, with a red boomerang.
Amongst the Scout Badge Club and other
members of the Scout association, this badge is much sought after as a
collector's item due to it being a replica of the first Australian Jamboree
Badge.
Our AGL, Ann Scholes, has put
together what can be best described as the definitive study of the 1934/1935
Jamboree. Ann and her husband John have collected many interesting photos,
diary extracts, and articles from local newspapers and even the daily Jamboree
paper, and put these together on a website:
